Recent UNF graduate Alexa Velez wins Frankenthaler Climate Art Award

Alexa VelezAlexa Velez, a recent UNF photography graduate from the Department of Art, Art History and Design, is one of three winners in the 2022 Frankenthaler Climate Art Awards for her short film “Of the Air.” Velez’s short films have been screened both nationally and internationally.

“The film is a reaction to the climate crisis in the form of a duet between a living, breathing body and the air,” said Velez. “This piece is a reminder that even though we live in structures that isolate us from the natural world, we are part of that environment and depend on it for our survival.”

Presented by Asia Society and the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, the Frankenthaler Climate Art Awards aim to foster climate change awareness through the imagination and insights of an upcoming generation of visual artists.

While at UNF, Velez worked as an art teaching lab specialist before receiving her MFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2021.
