Taylor Leadership Institute partners with First Tee to prepare scholars

The University of North Florida’s Taylor Leadership Institute is partnering with First Tee to serve as leadership mentors for the First Tee Scholars as part of a Pre-College Retreat.

First Tee strives to make golf affordable and accessible for all kids and offers life skills curriculum that supports the development of nine core values that can be learned through the game of golf – honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment.

This partnership will serve as a model of collaboration between UNF’s Taylor Leadership Institute and First Tee as they work together to help equip the First Tee Scholars with the leadership skills that will help them thrive both now and in the future.

UNF faculty, athletic coaches, graduate students, community partners and staff are delivering leadership workshops for the high school students attending the Pre-College Retreat including:

  • “Understanding Your Strengths” featuring Dr. Matthew Ohlson, Taylor Leadership Institute director, and Stephanie Garcia Pulido, graduate student
  • “Time Management & Navigating Conflict” featuring Rick Tryon, retired Lt. General USMC and Hicks Honors College instructor, and Bob Buehn, retired U.S. Navy Capt. and MVRC director
  • “Student Athlete Support Services” featuring Jenny Barth, Student-Athlete Center for Excellence assistant athletic director; Joanne Berglund, head coach women’s golf; and four student-athletes

The Taylor Leadership Institute facilitates both curricular and co-curricular leadership education, emphasizing the promotion and reward of personal, civic and community engagement through rigorous and innovative programs that advance student leadership development.
