UNF podcast talks with Black Lives Matter Jacksonville leadership

Inspired by the old saying to “never to talk about sex, money, Two members of Black Lives Matter Jacksonville leadershippolitics, or religion at the dinner table,” the “How to Ruin Dinner (HTRD): Conversations in Religious Studies” podcast tackles thought-provoking, difficult and often uncomfortable topics. The podcast will focus on religion and the African American community during fall semester 2020.

In the most recent episode, host Dr. Mary McGovern Treyz, UNF religious studies instructor, and co-host Hayden Heller, a UNF junior studying history, spoke with Roosevelt Williams, Black Lives Matter Jacksonville (BLMJax) president, and Lexus Alexander, BLM Jax medic and secretary, to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement and various religions contributions to it.

“I started this podcast because there are so many students and faculty at UNF with fascinating and relevant perspectives about the role of religion in our local community,” said Treyz. “I want this podcast to be a place where those voices are heard.”

Now in its third year, the HTRD podcast has covered various topics including how to read sacred texts, religious history, the role of sex and religion, and finding and leaving a religion. The HTRD podcast has interviewed UNF students and faculty, visiting speakers and members of the wider Jacksonville community to share a variety of different ideas and experiences about religion.
