Campus Fire Safety
Regulations
Fire safety and prevention are governed by the Florida Fire Prevention Code and the Standards of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The adopted codes that most impact UNF are NFPA 30, NFPA 45 and NFPA, 55. The full list of adopted standards can be found in Florida Administrative Code (FAC) 69A-3.012.
Annual Inspections
Pursuant to FAC 69A-3.011, the Office of the State Fire Marshal conducts inspections of all campus buildings to ensure compliance with the applicable standards. The inspector from the State Fire Marshal's Office is accompanied by representatives from UNF Physical Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). Following the inspection a report is provided to EH&S and emails are subsequently distributed to the department chair or director for correction.
Common Violations
Extension Cords
Extension cords may only be used for temporary applications. If adequate electrical outlets are not close to the desired location, a Capital Project Service Request must be submitted through with the Office of Campus Planning Design and Construction to request additional outlets. Below is an example of an extension cord being used to locate the shredder where an outlet did not exist.
"Daisy Chained" Electrical Devices
A daisy chain is created when an electrical device, such as a surge protector, is plugged into another electrical device, such as a UPS battery backup. All surge protectors should be plugged directly into the electrical outlet in the wall. If additional outlets are needed, then a CPSR should be submitted to request additional outlets. Below is a photo of a daisy chain created with two surge protectors.
Supplemental Space Heaters used on campus are required to have a safety tip-over switch. This safety switch will turn the heating element off if the heater is turned over. To test your heater, turn it on and tip it over. If it does not immediately stop producing hot air, then it should be removed from campus. Non-compliant heaters will be identified and labeled during annual inspections.
Inadequate Sprinkler Clearance
In buildings with automatic fire sprinkler systems all items must be store at least 18" below the ceiling. The photo below shows an example of storage too high.
Improper Storage of Flammable or Combustible Materials
Items that are flammable or combustible may not be stored in office spaces or standard storage closets. Flammable materials, which includes most aerosol cans, must be stored in approved flammable storage cabinets. EH&S can provide assistance in selecting an appropriate cabinet for your departmental needs.
Blocked Emergency Equipment
Emergency equipment must be accessible at all times. The primary emergency equipment at UNF includes fire alarm pull stations, fire extinguishers, and emergency shut off devices.
Blocked Exit Pathways
Doors with an automatic door closer should not be propped open with a garbage can. The garbage can hinders rapid egress and some models may tip over creating a tripping hazard.
Due to infrequent use, some exit pathways become obstructed by items that do not have a permanent location. If your work space has a second exit, please ensure that it is fully accessible in case of an emergency.
Candles, Incense and Electric Air Fresheners
Open Flames, embers and similar sources of heat are prohibited in state buildings. Many air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds which can result in irritation and health concerns. These items should not be used on campus.
