Opportunities for Students

  • Archivist in Training Program
The Archivist in Training Program at UNF provides opportunities for undergraduate students to learn about archival processes and gain hands-on experience through paid, for-credit internships with community partner institutions. Designed by Dr. Laura Heffernan, professor of English, and Susan Swiatosz, head of Special Collections and University Archives, the program began in Fall 2025 with a cohort of five students who undertook intensive training in UNF’s Special Collections and University Archives and then spent most of the semester working on-site at five community organizations in Jacksonville and St. Augustine: the Durkeeville Historical Society, the Eartha M.M. White Museum, the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center, the Mandarin Historical Society, and the Ritz Theatre and Museum. For information, contact Dr. Heffernan.
  • DHI/Hicks Technology Fellows

The DHI/Hicks Technology Fellows program creates opportunities for students from the Hicks Honors College to gain experience with technology, project management, and outreach. The Tech Fellows  provide support for the DHI Media Lab, the History Lab, and other spaces for interactive media on campus by helping faculty and students to carry out projects involving audio and video recording and the digitization of archival documents and photographs. For information about how to get involved, contact Dr. Clayton McCarl.

  • Internships

The DHI assists students to arrange internships (both for-credit and not-for-credit) working with faculty mentors on a wide range of digital projects. The DHI also helps students to secure internships with community partners, including local museums, archives, and historical societies. See Student Accomplishments for recent examples and contact Dr. Clayton McCarl for assistance in getting started.

  • Media Lab
The DHI Media Lab is available to students for recording audio and video and scanning documents and photograhs. The Media Lab also has gear available for check out. For assistance, contact Dr. Clayton McCarl.
