Tom has served UNF since 2002 as both Student Ombudsman and Dean of Students. In his current role as Ombudsman, he serves as a confidential, impartial, independent, and informal resource for UNF students experiencing challenges who either have tried unsuccessfully to resolve them or are not sure of how to address their concerns. The Ombuds helps students identify options for resolution and resources for support based on their unique situation and/or circumstances.
Tom’s education includes a Bachelor of Arts Psychology from Allegheny College, a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology and an Ed.S. in Student Personnel Services from the University at Albany, SUNY. He also completed the Graduate Certificate program in Nonprofit Management from University of North Florida in 2013 as well as additional training in Conflict Transformation and Mediation. He is a member of the International Ombudsman Association .
As the Ombuds I assist students with:
- Understanding and navigating university policies and procedures
- Complex problem solving
- Identifying strategies and options to resolve problems
- Addressing issues and complaints associated with university personnel and services
- Questions about students’ rights and responsibilities
- Academic, Financial aid and other appeal processes
- Addressing personal, health and family issues affecting their continued enrollment and academic success
As the Ombuds I do not assist students with:
- Assist with non-university concern
- Does not participate or advocate for a student in any formal university process
