UNF celebrates Black History Month
The University of North Florida celebrates Black History Month to uplift and honor the histories, stories, and voices of the African American community. The UNF Intercultural Center for Peace has planned engaging and informative virtual events and programs throughout the month to acknowledge the robust history and culture of Black Americans and others of African Descent.
Event highlights include a keynote address from Mal Jones, award-winning hip-hop artist, at the Black History Month kickoff event on Monday, Feb. 1; the 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Celebration featuring award-winning journalist Roland Martin on Wednesday, Feb. 10; and the Black Love Matters discussion event moderated by Letisha Bereola, Action News Jax anchor/reporter, and Enitan Bereola, award winning author, on Monday, Feb. 15.
This month provides a time to reflect on the incredible contributions of African Americans and the ongoing struggles for human and civil rights. February was chosen as Black History Month because it coincides with the birthdays of two men who played significant roles in helping to end slavery: President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
