Virtual art history lectures on American renewal/transformation
Dr. P. Scott Brown, professor of art history, will present a three-part “Lockdown Lectures” series via Zoom in partnership with the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens.
“While the world is coming out of lockdown and we have felt isolated from the places that bring us together and inspire us - our museums, schools, houses of worship, universities, and even our beaches- I wanted to reach out to our broader community and share a message of optimism,” said Brown. “The artwork that is the focus of my lectures tells an important story about the complex beauty and history of our city. I hope these talks serve as a reminder that now, more than ever, we need to support the cultural resources that make Jacksonville such a special community.”
Three free, art history lessons will focus on works of art from the Cummer Museum’s permanent collection. As the world is preparing to reopen from pandemic shutdowns, these lectures will focus on American renewal and transformation, specifically the iconic cowboy myth, an African American artist engaged in interpreting the European past for the American future, and presidential portraiture.
