CCEC Programs for High Schools

Computing

National Center for Women in Technology (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing. UNF CCEC is an Affiliate Award Site. This program engages young women interested in technology and computing. By generating visibility for these young women in their local communities, the program encourages their continued interest in computing, attracts the attention and support of educational and corporate institutions, and emphasizes at a personal level the importance of women's participation in computing and IT.

Women in Information Technology - CITI – UNF CCEC partners with CITI to help middle and high school young women learn more about computer science and the careers that are associated with them. The sessions are 90 minutes in length for middle school students and 45-60 minutes for high school students, consisting of a presentation, videos and games facilitated by Citi employees. Topics include facts about women in IT, the types of roles that are available, inspirational personal stories and information about the lifestyle benefits that an IT career can provide. Participants are also asked to complete web-based assessments before and during the course to help identify activities that interest them. The course then relates those skills and interests to careers like project management, computer programming and graphic design, among others. Each role description also includes background on the average salaries and typical educational requirements. Young women in this program who may be interested in furthering their knowledge of this field can apply to the CITI internship program where they will submit an essay for a chance to earn a 1-week paid internship at Citi. The students who are accepted will learn about the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) which provides a model for the development & lifecycle management of software and applications. 

The School of Computing offers week long computing summer camp programs for middle and high school students.

The students will:

  • Participate in team building activities
  • Receive complimentary buffet lunch at the Osprey Café
  • Receive free parking pass each day of session
  • Learn about UNF programs and participate in campus tours
  • Enjoy complimentary snacks and bottled water throughout the day

Mentoring

ACE Mentor Program of Northeast Florida, Inc., UNF is host site for the Student Presentation and Scholarship Awards Banquet. This program helps high school students explore potential careers in architecture, construction and engineering. Through the program, mentors from local industry professional firms meet with students for two hours once a week for 16 weeks. During these sessions, students work in teams to create practical solutions for "real-world" projects. It's an effective way for students to experience the reality of what architects, contractors and engineers do during a typical working day. Winning teams compete at nationals in Washington. D.C.
