Master of Science in Construction Management

The UNF Master of Science (MS) in Construction Management offers courses in a variety of construction related areas including construction estimating, scheduling, construction techniques, and document control. Students have the option to choose between three track options to complete the 30-credit hour requirement for the degree: 1) course work only, 2) thesis option, 3) executive thesis option.

    Student Learning Outcomes

    Graduates will be able to:

    1. Create written and oral communications appropriate to the construction discipline.
    2. Produce construction project safety plans, estimates, and schedules.
    3. Analyze professional decisions based on ethical principles.
    4. Evaluate construction documents for planning and management of construction processes.
    5. Analyze methods, materials, and equipment used to construct projects.
    6. Apply electronic-based technology to manage the construction process.
    7. Analyze different methods of project delivery and the roles and responsibilities of all constituencies involved in the design and construction process.
    8. Utilize construction accounting, cost control, risk management, and quality control.
    9. Interpret the legal implications of contract, common, and regulatory law to manage a construction project. 
    10. Recognize the principles of sustainable construction.
    11. Analyze the principles of structural behavior and material response. 

    Major Requirements

    The Construction Management Master’s Degree consists of a minimum of thirty credit hours. Students without a Construction or Engineering degree are required to complete PHY 2053: Algebra Based Physics I (3 credits) and Lab (1 credit) and BCN 2405: Introduction to Structures (3 credits) prior to registering for 5000-6000 level construction courses.

    Meet with your faculty academic advisor to select 24 credits from the Major Coursework and 6 credits from the Culminating Experience section. 

    All programs of study must be approved by the Construction Management Graduate Program Coordinator prior to the end of the second semester of graduate study. Students must select sufficient hours of Coursework at the graduate level to earn a total of 30 credits in the program, including three credits from outside department.

    UNF Conditions for the Degree:

    1. A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained. If the GPA falls below 3.0, the student will be placed on Academic Probation. 
    2. At least 18 hours of coursework at the 6000-level must be applied to the degree.

    Construction Management Department Conditions for the Degree:

    1. All coursework must be completed with a grade of “B” or better.
    2. A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained. If the GPA falls below 3.0, academic probation will result.
    3. A student may transfer up to 12.0 of approved coursework from outside institutions.

    2. 24 credit hours from the Major Requirement Options and 6 credit hours of Thesis.

    Departmental Requirements

    Meet with your faculty academic advisor to select 24 credits from the major requirement options section or approved electives from business or a STEM field, up to 6 credit hours of electives are allowed and up to 12 hours of Independent Research are allowed if no outside electives are selected. Each credit hour of outside electives decreases the credit hours of Independent Research allowed.

    The Project-Based Thesis Option offers the choice of three course-tracks.

    1. 18 credit hours from the Major Requirement Options, 6 credit hours from the Elective Options, and 6 credit hours of Project-Based Thesis – OR – 
    2. 18 credit hours from the Major Requirement Options and 12 credit hours of Project-Based Thesis – OR –   
    3. 24 credit hours from the Major Requirement Options and 6 credit hours of Project-Based Thesis.

Admission Requirements

For the course work and thesis options, applicants must have earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or its equivalent from a foreign institution with a grade point average of 3.0 (B) or higher in all work attempted as an upper-division student, typically the last 60 credit hours. Students must have taken BCN2405: Introduction to Structures (3 Credits) and PHY2053: Algebra-Based Physics I (3 Credits) or the equivalent.

For the Executive Thesis Option: A Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction, Civil Engineering or a closely related field from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or its equivalent from a foreign institution and five (5) years of industry experience with at least three (3)-years at the Project Manager Level (or equivalent) or above.

UNF Conditions for the Degree:

  1. A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained. If the GPA falls below 3.0, the student will be placed on Academic Probation.
  2. At least 18 hours of coursework at the 6000-level must be applied to the degree.
  3. All coursework for a graduate or post-baccalaureate professional degree must be completed within six years of a master's degree-seeking student being admitted to a graduate program.  All exceptions must be approved by the student's Graduate Program Director and the Dean of the Graduate School.

Department of Construction Management Conditions for the Degree:

  1. All coursework must be completed with a grade of "B" or better.
  2. A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained. If the GPA falls below 3.0, academic probation will result.
  3. No more than 6.0 hours of transfer coursework can be applied to the degree. However, a student may transfer up to 12.0 hours from graduate classes taken within the Florida State University System, provided the total of all transfer courses does not exceed 12 credit hours.
  4. A student may not receive 5000-level credit for a cross-listed 4000/5000-level course previously completed at the 4000-level.
