Program Mission, Goals and Objectives

Program Mission

The mission of the Department of Construction Management is to educate and develop construction professionals with a global perspective through a rigorous, relevant, and accredited degree program offered by faculty devoted to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities, service projects, community involvement and ethical standards. Students will experience an active working relationship with local industry and develop a global perspective through cooperative efforts and exchange programs with international universities and colleges in the framework of a culture of ethics, which are vital in the development of successful construction professionals and provides distinct characteristics for our graduate's pursuit of career development and professional opportunities.

Program Learning Outcomes

1. Oral and Written Communication: communicate effectively, conduct oral presentations, write succinctly and generate professional reports.
2. Problem Solving and Critical Thinking: Understand and solve construction problems. Demonstrate the ability to think and reason logically to make sound economic decisions.
3. Ethical Standards: Know and uphold ethical standards of the field.
4. Entry into Industry: Be prepared for successful entry into the construction industry.

1. Continuing education and entrepreneurship: Achieve prominent positions in the industry, continue education in related post-grad degrees and latest software technology trends, or successfully maintain entrepreneur endeavors.

Oral and Written Communication

Communicate effectively, conduct oral presentations, write succinctly and generate professional reports. The following lists the measures of this program learning outcomes:

1. Measure 1: Indirect assessment. Employers of the CM student Interns evaluate the job performance of the students per their oral and written communication skills on a scale of 0 to 10 (10 being the highest).
   
   
2. Measure 2: Indirect assessment. Graduating seniors are asked to rate their learning with respect to oral and written communication skills in a graduating senior survey.
   
   
3. Measure 3: Direct assessment. Student presentation skills and paper writing are measured by instructor and industry guests grades on a scale from A to F and recorded in oral and written communication rubrics. The related courses to this measure include:

Problem Solving and Critical Thinking

2. Measure 2: Indirect assessment. Graduating seniors are asked to rate their learning with respect to problem solving skills in a graduating senior survey.
   
   
3. Measure 3: Direct assessment. Students are taking the courses and are assessed by instructor and industry guests through exams, quizzes, homework, and projects. Students are also strongly encouraged to take the Florida General Contractors Exam. The related courses to this measure include:

2. Measure 2: Indirect assessment. Graduating seniors are asked to rate their readiness to enter the construction industry in a graduating senior survey.
