AAFSA Scholarship

The African American Faculty & Staff Association (AAFSA) Scholarship, established to celebrate diversity, assists in providing financial support to undergraduate and graduate students who attend the University of North Florida. Each academic year, AAFSA awards at least two $500 scholarships, or more, as funds are available.

AAFSA Scholarship applications generally open in early to mid-fall each academic year. Scholarship awards will be presented at the AAFSA Winter General Assembly Meeting.

ELIGIBILITY

Preference given to the following applicants:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate (at least 12 credit hours) or graduate student (at least 9 credit hours) at the University of North Florida
  • Must have a University cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (for undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate) before the scholarship end date as noted in the Application Requirements
  • Prior year scholarship recipients are not eligible
  • Exhibits an interest in enriching and supporting individuals of African-American descent, and/or
  • Exhibits leadership in promoting an understanding of challenges that African-Americans or other minorities
  • Experience in higher education, and/or
  • Enhances awareness of African-American cultural, educational, and civic activities

Application and Submission Requirements

Applications for the AAFSA Scholarship are submitted electronically. Paper applications are made available upon request from potential applicants.

  • Completed scholarship application
  • Essay describing how the applicant meets the the eligibility criteria listed above, how the scholarship will contribute to the student's education at UNF, and include the applicant's involvement in campus and community activities (no more than 300 words)
  • Recommendation Questionnaire from a current AAFSA voting member
  • Letter of reference from any other individual or organization (OPTIONAL)

Scholarship Selection Process

  • The Selection Committee reviews applications and select recipients approximately two (2) weeks after the application deadline.
  • Applicants are evaluated on adherence to application requirements, essays, supporting recommendations, scholastic achievement, campus and community involvement, financial need and presentation of application.
  • Recipients are notified by the AAFSA President, or designee. All recipients are invited and encouraged to attend the AAFSA General Winter Assembly Meeting, where award recipients are recognized and presented with their scholarship certificates. The names of award recipients are published in the AAFSA Announcements.
