Julie Merten, Ph.D. | Director of Faculty Excellence

Julie Merten, Ph.D., MCHES is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health, serves as the Program Director for the Interdisciplinary Health Studies program in the Brooks College of Health, and is the Editor-in-Chief for the Florida Public Health Review journal.

Her research involves behavioral cancer prevention, specifically in the areas of skin cancer (the most common cancer in the US) and tobacco control (the leading cause of preventable deaths in the US). She has used her research training to evaluate the effectiveness of school-based sun safety education, analyzed how people utilize the Internet and social media for cancer information, surveyed children, adolescents and young adults on their skin cancer prevention behaviors, assess cancer prevention programs among special populations, and implemented skin cancer assessment and referral intervention to increase national skin cancer screening rates.

Kim began working at UNF in 2018 and has had several previous positions, working as a Program Assistant, Administrative Secretary, and Office Manager. She is now supporting the Offices of Faculty Development & Research. Kim has a B.S. Degree in Education K-12 and loves working with students. She takes advantage of the UNF Wellness Center, walking every day on the indoor track. She enjoys working out and playing Pickleball with her husband and friends. Kim especially enjoys spending time with family and if you really want to see her light up, ask her about her two grandchildren.
