Renowned violinist & conductor returns to play with UNF’s Lawson Ensemble

Lawson Ensemble playing with violinist Scott Yoo in December PerformanceThe first Lawson Ensemble chamber music event of the new year is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, in the UNF Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

The group is in residence at UNF and performs regularly on the University’s campus, in Jacksonville and around the region. Dr. Nick Curry, associate professor of cello, is one of the three anchor musicians of the Lawson Ensemble.

Joining the Ensemble to perform works by Mozart are returning special guest performers and married couple Scott Yoo, violinist and composer from the PBS program “Now Hear This”, and flutist Alice Dade from the University of Missouri.

Last December, Yoo performed with an extremely rare multi-million-dollar Stradivarius violin, built by members of the Italian family Stradivari during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Yoo is the chief conductor and artistic director of the Mexico City Philharmonic and the music director of Festival Mozaic. He is the host and executive producer of the currently running PBS series “Now Hear This” presented by Great Performances. He is the conductor of the Colorado College Music Festival, and the founder of the Medellín Festicámara, a chamber music program that brings together world-class artists with underprivileged young musicians.

Hear a clip of December’s performance and a brief interview with Curry as he talks about the upcoming Lawson Ensemble concert.
