UNF hosts Florida Field School Environmental Restoration planting project

The University of North Florida Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) and Botanical Garden hosted a Florida Field School Environmental Restoration project for the UNF community at Lake Oneida last week. The project was funded through a grant from the Florida Native Plant Society Ixia Chapter.

At the event, Florida Native Plant Society members led a workshop to teach participants about the importance of native plants. Then the volunteers restored and planted native plants to enhance natural habitats on campus.

The Florida Field School is an opportunity for students to learn about Florida habitats, species and current environmental issues through experiential learning. Students also learn about potential career paths and network with a wide range of environmental professionals.

The next Florida Field School event will take place at Gold Head Branch State Park from Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2. Registration will open soon on the UNF IERE website.
