UNF kicks off 50th Anniversary with scholarship giveaways, festivities & more

Two male students taking a selfie with Ozzy outside the UNF ArenaThe University of North Florida kicked off its 50th Anniversary with a special on-campus event that brought together students, faculty and staff for a celebration in the Arena Plaza.

The Osprey community gathered to celebrate UNF’s 50th year with scholarship giveaways, music, prizes and more. A total of six scholarships were raffled off to students in attendance thanks to generous donations from Community First Credit Union, Steven Joost, the UNF Board of Trustees and the UNF Foundation.

UNF’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library has also developed an interactive University historical timeline, special exhibits and a speaker series in honor of the 50th.

The special exhibits can be viewed in person at the UNF Library’s Special Collections Reading Room, Building 12, Room 1301. The in-person exhibit schedule for 2022 is:

  • Jan. Founding UNF and The LGBTQ Center
  • Feb. to March: Black History and Women’s History at UNF
  • April to May: UNF’s First Commencement & Environmental History of UNF
  • May to July: Christine Rasche Collection
  • Aug. to Oct.: 50 Years at UNF

Founding UNF: A University of North Florida 50th Anniversary Exhibit is a special online and in-person collection of photos, historical documents, books and more covering the rich history of the University. Viewers can take a journey into UNF’s past to discover how 1,000 acres of land in the Deerwood area of southside, Jacksonville transformed and grew into the distinguished University we know today.

UNF Through the Years features a selection of items from the University of North Florida's University Archives. Viewers can see and experience exclusive photos of campus construction, UNF’s first commencement, The Spinnaker Vol. 1 and more. The exhibit also features a UNF time capsule that was created in 1997 during the University's 25th anniversary celebration and was opened as we prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary in 2022.

The Library will also host monthly speakers in honor of the 50th Anniversary. Each month’s talk will feature a new topic relating to the history of UNF and the Jacksonville community.
