UNF Institute of Environmental Research & Education awarded Sierra Club’s 2021 Osprey Award

UNF IERE staff accept Sierra Club awardThe Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club awarded the UNF Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) the 2021 Osprey Award. The IERE was nominated by the Sierra Club’s Northeast Florida Group.

The Osprey Award is given annually to organizations that show extraordinary efforts to promote or effect changes in policy or practice to protect and preserve Florida’s environment.

The IERE was recognized for its ongoing efforts to support the development of future environmental leaders through its Environmental Leadership Program (ELP). The ELP is an opportunity for undergraduate students from any major at UNF to be awarded a competitive scholarship and participate in leadership training.

Each year, the ELP students team up with organizations, businesses and non-profits around Jacksonville to plan and implement unique environmentally focused projects. The ELP helps students develop into leaders while finding impactful solutions to local environmental problems in Northeast Florida.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the Sierra Club for our efforts to inspire and empower the next generation of environmental leaders who will make a difference in our community,” said Dr. Erin Largo-Wight, IERE director.

The ELP is made possible through the generous support of The Cummer Family Foundation and the Felburn Foundation.
