Nutrition and dietetics students conduct outreach in Ghana

UNF nutrition and dietetics graduate student attending to a childUNF nutrition and dietetics graduate students led by Dr. Lauri Wright, associate professor, recently returned from Ghana where they provided training and clinical support to nutrition professionals across the country.

The UNF team learned about treatment guidelines and preparing refeeding formulas at the Princess Marie Louise malnutrition hospital. They also screened children in the community for malnutrition.

The doctoral students presented to over 150 members of the Ghana Dietetics Association on wound healing and vitamin D. The team exchanged nutrition practice ideas at the University of Ghana Hospital, worked in the Burns Unit Korle Bu Hospital and toured the cleft palate clinic for Operation Smiles. They also learned about treating scoliosis and kyphosis in children at the Focus Orthopedic Hospital.

The students even had some downtime to enjoy cultural immersion activities including a cultural cooking classes, artisan and food markets, and visiting a historical site for the slave trade.

UNF’s nutrition and dietetics program has conducted nutrition outreach in Ghana annually since 2017.
