Student Academic Success Services receives international certification

Student during a tutoring sessionThe University of North Florida’s Student Academic Success Services (SASS) Peer Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Peer Assisted Student Success (PASS) programs have received official designations as internationally certified higher education learning programs through the College Reading and Learning Association.

UNF SASS Peer Tutoring received the International Tutor Training Program Certification that recognizes the program’s high standard of student employee training and peer mentorship and specifically highlights their effective organization. The SI and PASS programs received the International Peer Education Training Program Certification.

UNF’s SASS tutoring occurs in an open-lab format in three locations on campus or as virtual one-on-one appointments where students can meet with a tutor and receive personalized help with their coursework. Tutoring is offered for over 30 courses across eight departments.

In the SI and PASS programs, students who have taken historically challenging coursework repeat the course, plan and lead weekly study sessions where they review lecture material and help prepare other students for upcoming assessments, and share effective study strategies. SI and PASS are offered for over 80 course sections across 10 departments.

SASS student employees will now individually receive international certification designations upon completing SASS program training. These designations are accepted at other post-secondary institutions that are also certified and can be cited on their resumes or CVs.

The SASS office was formed at UNF in 2015 and has grown to six staff and over 120 student employees serving thousands of students each semester. SASS programs receive up to 50,000 visits from UNF students annually and heavily influence student development and academic growth. Regular usage of SASS services is highly correlated with improved course GPAs and pass rates.

This international certification is endorsed by the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations and its sister organizations such as the National College Learning Center Association and the Association of Colleges for Tutoring and Learning Assistance.
