Both programs were created to meet current regional and global engineering demands and provide the much-needed technical skills employers are seeking to best prepare our students to enter the workforce. As America turns focus to strengthening and improving our already strong national engineering and manufacturing capabilities, these degree programs will provide the most advanced technical skills to help our students lead the way in engineering the future.

Students in both programs will benefit from using UNF’s innovative and technologically advanced Materials Science and Engineering Research Facility, a multi-user electron microscopy and materials characterization center, and the Johnson & Johnson 3D Printing Center of Excellence on campus.

The program will serve students who want to pursue careers in production, design, development, quality assurance, technical sales, management, teaching, and research. Advanced Manufacturing topics range from traditional methods of fabrication to advanced modeling of automated systems.

The Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary graduate program created with input from over twenty UNF faculty involving biology, chemistry, physics, advanced manufacturing, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering . The program is designed to accommodate students from different undergraduate backgrounds, particularly those who have completed a bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences or engineering, but applicants with bachelor’s degrees in other areas may be admitted. Each graduate student will conduct significant original research under the guidance of a faculty mentor, culminating in the completion and defense of a master’s thesis.
