Famed journalist Roland Martin to speak at UNF 40th Annual MLK Scholarship Celebration
Roland S. Martin, an award-winning journalist, CNN contributor and author, will deliver the keynote address at the University of North Florida’s 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Celebration happening virtually at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 10. Four student scholarships will also be awarded.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Celebration is an annual ICP and Department of Diversity Initiatives event that provides scholarships to students whose leadership and service reflect King’s teachings and features an internationally acclaimed leader who speaks about the philosophy of nonviolence.
“The University is thrilled to welcome Roland Martin and celebrate 40 years of scholarship and service in honor of Dr. King’s legacy,” said Dr. Sheila Spivey, Department of Diversity Initiatives senior director. “We are grateful for the continued support and generous donations that have allowed the Intercultural Center for Peace to award student scholarships for four decades and continue our commitment to ensuring students at UNF have the opportunity to see how the dreams of Dr. King can be realized in their own lives.”
Martin is an award-winning journalist, known for his roles as a senior analyst for the nationally-syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show, a CNN contributor, and best-selling author of “The First: President Barack Obama’s Road to the White House as originally reported by Roland S. Martin”. He currently serves as the host and managing editor of “#RolandMartinUnfiltered,” the first daily online show focused on news and analysis of politics, entertainment, sports and culture from an explicitly African American perspective.
He has been named four times by Ebony Magazine as one of the 150 Most Influential African Americans in the United States. Martin was also named Journalist of the Year in 2013 by the National Association of Black Journalists for his extensive focus on voter suppression and other issues of concern to African Americans during the 2012 election.
