UNF Wind Symphony performance available on Spotify

In July of 2019, 42 students from the University of NorthUNF Wind Symphony performance from 2019 Florida’s Wind Symphony ensemble traveled to Buñol, Spain to perform at the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles conference. One of only two American bands invited to perform at the conference, their performance was recorded by Mark Custom Recording and was just recently released on Spotify.

Included on the recording is “Peña Amaya” by Dr. Clarence Hines, UNF School of Music director. The piece was inspired by a hike along the mountain trails of Peña Amaya in northern Spain. Also featured is Dr. Andrea Venet, UNF percussion assistant professor, and her duo partner Dr. Annie Stevens, Virginia Tech assistant professor. The duo, known as Escape X, performed Emmanuel Séjourné’s “Double Concerto for Marimba and Vibraphone” with the UNF Wind Symphony.

The recording opens with Tom Davoren’s “Return to the White City” which is an audio representation of the different phases of long-distance running and was written to commemorate Great Britain’s hosting of the Olympic Games in 2012. Another piece by Canadian composer Fred Stride was written in memory of a dear friend of Dr. Erin Bodnar, UNF Wind Symphony’s conductor.

The final performance is “Three Short Stories” by Gernot Wolfgang, a jazz and Latin inspired piece featuring UNF students and Hines making a guest appearance on trombone. The encore is a beautiful transcription of a movement from the “All-Night Vigil” by Sergei Rachmaninoff.
