MOCA Jacksonville reopens with new museum experience

MOCA Jacksonville, a cultural institute of UNF, has reopened for guests to enjoy. It is a new museum experience that includes in-person tours as well as live virtual tours of exhibitions to be enjoyed safely at home, both led by the museum’s curatorial and education teams. Museum staff developed a reopening plan focused on adhering to best practices outlined by the CDC and public health organizations, while maintaining the integrity of the museum guest experience.                                                 

Guest must register in advance online at mocajacksonville.unf.edu for both in-person and live virtual tours. All tours are 90-minutes long, and in-person tours are limited to 10 guests at a time.                                                                          

With the reopening, the museum has two new exhibitions on view for visitors to explore including “Project Atrium: Rina Banerjee,” which was set to open in March but was delayed due to the health crisis, as well as “Multiple Ones: Contemporary Perspectives in Print Media.”

The museum’s featured exhibition and permanent collection exhibition on view prior to the pandemic crisis have been extended. “Breaking Boundaries: The Vision of Jacqueline B. Holmes” is on view until November 15, 2020, while “Recent Acquisitions: History in the Making” is on view until September 20, 2020.

MOCA will continue its Museum at Home Experience, smART Online, which launched this spring in response to the museum closure in March. This dynamic virtual platform provides a wide range of digital experiences including interviews with artists, livestream programs, art activities for children, and Netflix Independent Film Viewing Parties.

“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our guests and staff alike, and we have developed an experience that is in alignment with CDC guidelines,” says Caitlín Doherty, MOCA director. “While this experience will be different from before, in many ways it will be more personal and innovative. Guests can enjoy private weekend tours of the exhibitions at the museum, as well as dynamic live virtual tour experiences to be enjoyed from the comfort of home.”
