UNF Meals on Wings program a ‘Positively JAX’ story

The University of North Florida’s Meals on Wings program was recently showcased by Channel 4 as one of the “Positively JAX” stories that highlight local people helping others within the community. UNF faculty are doing their part to continue to help elderly community members who are most at risk during this time and in need of essential meals and supplies.

Meals on Wings is one of UNF’s Center for Nutrition and Food Security programs that recovers unused food from local hospitals and repackages the food into healthful meals for homebound senior citizens who participate in the Meals on Wheels program. During this global COVID-19 situation, the Nutrition and Dietetics Flagship Program faculty have stepped up to continue this important community-outreach initiative. Faculty members are volunteering their time to fill the spots of students in the Meal on Wings program who normally prepare and deliver the meals weekly.

The mission of the Center for Nutrition and Food Security in UNF’s Brooks College of Health is to bring individuals and organizations together in a coordinated and sustained effort that finds solutions and eliminates barriers to improving food access and nutritional health in the local and global community.
