I. OBJECTIVE & PURPOSE
To establish a policy which requires all incoming students who have studied French and Spanish in high school to take the free online French and Spanish placement tests prior to enrolling at UNF. All Chinese students who have studied the language at the high school level or are heritage speakers must meet with the Chair of the Department of World Languages.

II. STATEMENT OF POLICY

Placement:
All incoming students who have studied French and Spanish in high school must take the free online French and Spanish placement tests prior to enrolling at UNF. Based on that score, students will be advised at which course level to enroll.

All heritage or native speakers of French or Spanish (who may not have studied the language in high school) must take the on-line placement test prior to enrolling in French or Spanish courses. In order to be placed appropriately, native speakers of Spanish, French must also meet with the Chair of the Department of World Languages.

All Chinese students who have studied the language at the high school level or who are heritage speakers of the language must meet with the Chair of the Department of World Languages prior to enrollment. The chair will refer them to the Chinese instructor to ascertain the level at which they must begin their language studies.

Retroactive Credit:

Students who enroll in French, Spanish or Chinese at the University of North Florida will be advised that they are eligible for up to six credit hours of retroactive credit as determined by placement and satisfactory completion of specific language courses.

If a student places at the intermediate level, s/he may receive a maximum of four hours of retroactive credit for Beginning Language II pending completion of the intermediate sequence (Intermediate Language I and II) with grades of C or above in both courses.

If a student places at the Intermediate Language II level, s/he is eligible for three hours of retroactive credit (equivalent to Intermediate Language I) pending completion of Intermediate Language II with a grade of C or above.

If a student places at the 3000-level, s/he is eligible for a maximum of six hours of retroactive credit. The student will receive three intermediate-level credit hours for completing a 3000-level Chinese, French or Spanish course with a grade of C or above, and an additional three credit hours for completing a second 3000-level course with a grade of C or above.

Students shall not be granted retroactive credit for courses for which they already have credit by other means such as through Advanced Placement exams, the International Baccalaureate exams, or the CLEP exam.

Students who wish to receive the retroactive credit must apply for the credits in the Department of World Languages after their grades are assigned and recorded in the relevant courses. The Registrar will add the retroactive credits to the student’s transcript with no grade assigned. These credits will not be computed into the GPA, but will count towards degree requirements as appropriate.

Students will pay a fee per 3-credit hour course as posted in the Catalog for which retroactive credit has been awarded. Because Beginning French II and Beginning Spanish II are each 4 credit hour courses, students will pay $133.33 if they place at the Intermediate I level and receive retroactive credit for Beginning French II or Beginning Spanish II.
