Welcome to FIE

At the Florida Institute of Education (FIE), we’re strengthening learning outcomes for children and communities across Florida. Established in 1982 to provide statewide educational leadership, FIE brings together universities, schools, early learning agencies, and community partners to address critical educational needs through research, innovation, and collaboration. With a focus on early learning, evidence‑based practice, and helping every child thrive, FIE works to ensure strong starts, bright futures, and equitable opportunities for all students.

Mission Statement

The Florida Institute of Education (FIE) provides statewide leadership to improve education at all levels by working collaboratively with Florida’s universities, state colleges, public schools, school-readiness agencies, and communities to:

  • Foster collaborative programs that address critical educational needs by supporting innovation and engaging in problem-focused research;
  • Increase access to and use of the knowledge and skills needed to improve practice and inform decision-making; and
  • Enhance achievement for all students, especially those at-risk.

Vision Statement

FIE’s vision for education excellence is embodied in the following statements:

  1. Every child will enter kindergarten eager and ready to read, ready to learn, and ready to succeed in school;
  2. Florida’s prekindergarten through postsecondary students will rank at the highest levels of academic performance and achievement, and will not be differentiated by race, gender, or socioeconomic status;
  3. Practitioners and researchers will view themselves as members of active learning communities committed to collaboration, ongoing learning, inquiry, and continuous improvement; and
  4. Families and communities will be fully engaged partners committed to improving children’s learning and social, emotional, and healthy development.

How FIE Carries Out Its Mission

Through practical, evidence-informed solutions, FIE addresses pressing needs across sectors and is developing and testing strategies that show promising results and have the potential to contribute to measurable educational and economic improvements in Northeast Florida and the state. FIE’s current initiatives demonstrate the practical application of FIE’s evidence-based multi-agency partnerships (MAPs) strategy and its focus on measurable educational outcomes.

FIE’s work follows a consistent translational model in which partner-identified challenges drive research-informed strategy development. FIE staff implement these strategies through collaborative partnerships, evaluate the strategies for impact, and refine the strategies and programs for broader application. Together, these four areas reflect FIE’s integrated approach to addressing real-world challenges: designing and testing innovation, strengthening capacity across educational systems, generating evidence for continuous improvement, and developing the next generation of practitioners and researchers.

FIE’s staff organize their work around four core functions that translate research into measurable impact:

Function 1:  Innovation Incubator

  • Designing and Testing Research-Informed Strategies

Function 2: Capacity Building and Technical Assistance

  • Improving Practice Across the Educational Continuum, Including Backbone Support for Implementation

Function 3: Research and Evaluation

  • Using Evidence to Guide Decision-Making

Function 4: Implementation and Systems Support

  • Aligning partner efforts toward shared goals and providing support structures for implementation.

Across the four functions, FIE collaborates with partners to translate research into practical actions that address partner-identified needs, strengthen programs, and support informed decision -making across the education continuum. Rather than operating as isolated initiatives, these functions work together to help partners respond to immediate challenges while building long-term capacity for sustained improvement.
