Welcome to FIE

At the Florida Institute of Education (FIE), we’re strengthening learning outcomes for children and communities across Florida. Established in 1982 to provide statewide educational leadership, FIE brings together universities, schools, early learning agencies, and community partners to address critical educational needs through research, innovation, and collaboration. With a focus on early learning, evidence‑based practice, and helping every child thrive, FIE works to ensure strong starts, bright futures, and equitable opportunities for all students.

Mission Statement

The Florida Institute of Education (FIE) provides statewide leadership to improve education at all levels by working collaboratively with Florida’s universities, community colleges, public schools, school-readiness agencies, and communities to:

  • Foster collaborative programs that address critical educational needs by supporting innovation and engaging in problem-focused research;
  • Increase access to and use of the knowledge and skills needed to improve practice and inform decision-making; and
  • Enhance achievement for all students, especially those at-risk.

Vision Statement

FIE’s vision for education excellence is embodied in the following statements:

  1. Every child will enter kindergarten eager and ready to read, ready to learn, and ready to succeed in school;
  2. Florida’s prekindergarten through postsecondary students will rank at the highest levels of academic performance and achievement, and will not be differentiated by race, gender, or socioeconomic status;
  3. Practitioners and researchers will view themselves as members of active learning communities committed to collaboration, ongoing learning, inquiry, and continuous improvement; and
  4. Families and communities will be fully engaged partners committed to improving children’s learning and social, emotional, and healthy development.

How FIE Carries Out Its Mission

To provide statewide leadership in improving education, the Florida Institute of Education (FIE) carries out its work through two complementary roles: system stewardship and applied innovation. Together, these roles strengthen educational systems while advancing practical, evidence-informed solutions for early learning and literacy across Northeast Florida and communities throughout the state.

As a system steward, FIE serves as a backbone entity that brings partners together to align priorities, coordinate strategy, and support shared goals and measures. FIE’s research and evaluation capacity supports this work by helping partners use data and evidence to inform decision-making and continuous improvement. FIE elevates the voices of families and practitioners and helps partners navigate the policy and funding environments that shape educational practice. This work is neutral, enabling, and long-term.

At the same time, FIE acts as an applied innovation and solution-development partner, working with early learning partners to address pressing problems of practice. Through problem-focused research, design, and evaluation, FIE designs, develops, produces, implements, and refines teaching and learning materials, tools, and supports. FIE pilots and tests new approaches, studies outcomes and implementation, and uses evidence to strengthen solutions and prepare them for adoption, scaling, or handoff.

By integrating research, evaluation, system coordination, and applied innovation, FIE increases access to knowledge, strengthens practice, and advances educational outcomes for all learners—especially those most at risk.
