UNF Hosts ‘Muslim Journeys’ Community Conversation

The OneJax Institute at UNF will host “Muslim Journeys: Stories and Conversations; Reflections on Our Common Wealth,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at Building 43, Adam W. Herbert University Center, on the University of North Florida campus.

Organized and sponsored by the OneJax Institute, UNF Interfaith Center, Islamic Center of Northeast Florida, Jacksonville Public Library and Dr. Yazan and Dima Khatib, OneJax Institute Founders Circle members, the evening will include live Turkish music, Islamic poetry, as well as human stories and community conversations that encourage the audience to reflect on our common wealth as Americans in the 21 st century. The focus will be personal faith journeys of students, community members and keynote storyteller, Dr. Kambiz GhaneaBassiri.

GhaneaBassiri is an associate professor of religion and humanities at Reed College. He received his bachelor's degree in religious studies from Claremont McKenna College in 1994 and completed his master's and doctoral degrees in Islamic studies in the Committee on the Study of Religion at Harvard University in 2003.

In 2006 and 2007, GhaneaBassiri served as interim director of academic affairs at Dar Al Hadith Al Hassania, a prestigious, state-sponsored Islamic seminary in Rabat, Morocco. He was selected as a Carnegie Scholar in 2006 for his book on the history of Islam in America, “From the New World to the New World Order.” GhaneaBassiri specializes in classical and modern Islamic intellectual and social history in the Middle East.
