Wanyonyi Kendrick, a University of North Florida alumna, has authored the new book “The Girl: A Memoir of a Mother to Her Daughter” and will have a book-signing event on the UNF campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, inside the UNF Bookstore, located in the Student Union, Building 58W.

Kendrick, a mother of three children, started writing “The Girl” during a difficult time of motherhood. Her book, a series of reflections presented from a mother’s viewpoint, helped her reflect on the rewards of motherhood while living the sometimes painful consequences.

“If “The Girl” helps just one mother laugh a little louder as she reflects on her own memories, then the book is a triumph,” said Kendrick, a Beaches resident. “If the bookprovides comfort to another mother and helps her forgive her own motherly imperfections, then its purpose has been fulfilled.”

“The Girl” offers sometimes painful reflections from the birth to college graduation of Kendrick’s first child. The book is divided into sections, covering everything from the ups and downs of newborn nurturing and potty training to the frustrations of fostering your child’s innate talents to supporting your child’s life decisions.

Kendrick, an executive in Northeast Florida, received her Bachelor of Business Administration and Masters of Accountancy from UNF. She was appointed to the UNF Board of Trustees by Gov. Jeb Bush in 2002 and completed her second term as the chair of the Finance and Audit Committee in 2011.

UNF, a nationally ranked university located on an environmentally beautiful campus, offers students who are dedicated to enriching the lives of others the opportunity to build their own futures through a well-rounded education.
