Capitol Steps to Open UNF Fine Arts 2008-09 Season
(JACKSONVILLE, FL) – The UNF Fine Arts Center will soon become the center of political comedy when The Capitol Steps bring their unique wit and musical mischievousness to the Lazarra Performance Hall to lampoon the left, right and everything in between on September 25th at 7:30 p.m.
The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!"), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.
Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded 28 albums, including their latest, Campaign and Suffering. They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.
Prior to the performance, the Center will host a “front porch” Patriotic Jamboree starting at 6 p.m. complete with complimentary straw hats, Old Glory, a brass band, and food vendors! You’ll have the opportunity to register for voting in this year’s elections.
“Happening just a few weeks before the Presidential and Congressional elections, this performance couldn’t be any more timely and relevant,” said Sharon Papian, executive director of The Center. “It’s also exciting to be helping with voter registration. Whether it is UNF’s faculty, staff, and students, or our patrons, getting people more engaged in the democratic process is a valuable reminder of a vital role that the arts can have in a free society.”
