Canvas Transition

UNF Selection of Canvas

On January 8, 2016 the Florida Board of Governors notified SUS presidents that Canvas was selected as the state's common LMS. The Negotiation Team judged the reviewed learning management systems on five criteria:

  • The completeness and detail of the proposal submitted and follow-up amendments;
  • An assessment of the Vendor’s ability to deliver the indicated service in accordance with the specifications set out in this ITN;
  • The overall ease of use for university and college faculty and students;
  • Company experience;
  • Pricing.

Following that announcement, the University of North Florida conducted an open review and comment period. Based upon the recommendations of the Campus Technology Committee (CTC) and the Distance Learning Committee (DLC), the Provost announced on March 7, 2017 that UNF would adopt Canvas.

Canvas Implementation

Academic Affairs and Information Technology Services committed to robust faculty support for a smooth transition from Blackboard to Canvas. Faculty were able to begin using Canvas in July 2016. Multiple training and course migration support options were available for instructors during the transition, and Blackboard was retired on May 31, 2017.   


A transition steering committee, implementation team, and communication marketing group led the campus wide effort.
