The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Resource Center at the University of North Florida was recently awarded $21,000
from the LGBT Community Fund for Northeast Florida and The Community Foundation
for Northeast Florida. The funds will be used in support of the Club Can-Do
mentoring program, including a formal academic research study on the impacts on
program participants, and the second annual LGBT Issues public lecture series.
Club Can-Do is a 10-month, community-based
student achievement and mentoring program for students who identify as lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex and/or asexual. The program
incorporates an achievement and goal-based curriculum informed by community and
student voices, as well as scholarly research to ensure that mentor time is
effective and meaningful. Students are matched with a community member based on
shared interests, experiences and goals.
“Club Can-Do wouldn’t be possible without the
generous support from the LGBT Fund,” said Kaitlin Legg, director of the LGBT
Resource Center at UNF. “The grant enhances the Center’s capacity to research,
create, execute and manage a mentoring curriculum that supports and empowers
LGBT young people. Club Can-Do is an opportunity for UNF to attract, retain, support
and graduate talented LGBT students who will go on to make a positive impact in
the lives of others.”
The LGBT Community Fund award will also be used
to support an educational lecture series, LGBT Issues. Each year the series
focuses on a pressing issue within the LGBT community, and next year it will
focus on the intersection of LGBT identities and race in the U.S. In addition
to the public lecture, there are educational meetings and talks with community
as well as University leaders in an effort to education stakeholders.
The mission of the LGBT
Resource Center at UNF is to provide valuable education and resources for the
entire campus community with a commitment to advocacy, equality, respect and
support for LGBT students, faculty and staff.
