UNF Department of English Presents 2016 Playwrights’ Project
Contact: Joanna Norris, Director
of Public Relations
The University of North
Florida’s Department of English will present “The Playwrights’ Project:
Original Plays for Young Adults” at 7:30 p.m.
Dec.10, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at the John E. Matthews Jr. Computer
Science Building, Building 15, Room 1304.
This theater event
represents the culmination of a community-based transformational learning
dramatic writing project. Student writers in this
year’s Playwrights’ Project visited a class of students at Robert E. Lee High
School. Through improvisation and theater games, UNF writers sought to discover
their burning issues—problems young people face in a complex world.
The result of this collaborative
effort is an evening of original 10-minute plays written and directed by UNF
students. The plays address issues such as bullying, teen pregnancy, parental
expectations, poverty, suicide, racial identity in America and the effects of
social media on identity formation. Playwrights address these issues through
the lens of drama, parody and comedy.
Produced by Dr. Pam Monteleone, UNF
professor of English and drama, the cast features UNF students and staff, high
school students and members of the Jacksonville and Beaches communities.
Performances are free and open to the public.
