The University of North Florida’s Intercultural Center for PEACE and Interfaith Center will host an International Day of Peace celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Student Union Osprey Plaza.
Established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, the International Day of Peace, or better known as “Peace Day,” provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. Organizations from the Jacksonville community and the University will share their ways of building a culture of peace through music, education, health, volunteerism and art.
Among the participants will be Hands on Jacksonville, putting together peace bracelets to distribute to those that need a reminder that there is peace, love and beauty in the world. Healthy Osprey will also be on hand to demonstrate how the development of a healthy body, mind and spirit can bring peace.
UNF professor Dan Richards will conduct a peace-building activity, which includes folding paper cranes for peace. Folded cranes will be sent to Hiroshima, Japan, so that UNF’s wishes for peace can join countless others who have wished for peace and folded paper cranes to demonstrate their devotion to the cause.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Chris Bender at (904) 620-2475.
