University of North Florida Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations, Jeff Wuerth, announced today the hiring of Chris Whitehead as Assistant Director for Athletics Media Relations. Whitehead joins the UNF staff after spending the past four years at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he served as the primary media contact for women’s basketball, men’s golf and the Ragin’ Cajuns’ nationally-ranked softball team. In his time at UL, Whitehead also handled the communication needs for women’s soccer and baseball. In addition, Whitehead handled much of the graphic design needs of the UL athletic department. “We are very excited to have Chris round out our UNF Athletics Media Relations department,” Wuerth said. “He will be another valuable addition to the athletics department and allow us to continue to grow as a Division I member.”Whitehead will serve as the primary media contact for UNF’s men’s soccer team as well as the Ospreys’ baseball team. He will also handle swimming and diving and the online video needs for the department. “I am excited about the opportunity to work at the University of North Florida,” said Whitehead. “This is an exciting time at UNF and I look forward to being a part of the Osprey family as the teams enter their first year of post-season eligibility.”Prior to Louisiana, Whitehead was an intern in the sports information office at Georgia Tech. While with the Yellow Jackets, Whitehead oversaw the media relations for the men’s tennis team as well as the men’s and women’s cross country teams. He also assisted with game day operations for football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. Whitehead also spent a season working as a media relations intern for the Minor League Baseball team, the Greensboro Bats in North Carolina. The Natchez, Miss. native earned his bachelor’s degrees in management in 2002 from Georgia Tech. Whitehead also took master’s classes in public relations while at the University of Louisiana.Also joining the UNF Athletics Media Relations staff for the 2009-10 school year will be Andrew Hopkins. Hopkins will be a full-time intern in the department. Hopkins will graduate from UNF on July 31 with a degree in Sport Management. He has worked in the Ospreys Athletics Media Relations office as a student since August 2008. Hopkins will serve as the primary media contact for women’s soccer, cross country, track & field and softball.Hopkins is a native of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
