The University of North Florida’s Division of Continuing Education has partnered with Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board) to provide a new financial planning certificate program.
The first of a series of six courses (plus one optional capstone course) is scheduled to begin Friday, May 1, at the University Center on campus. Each course will meet for three consecutive Fridays from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“CFP Board is pleased to have an educational institution of the caliber of the UNF Division of Continuing Education now offering its approved financial planning curriculum,” said David G. Strege, CFP®, chair of CFP Board’s Board of Directors. “As student interest in financial planning as a career continues to grow, we anticipate that UNF’s program will contribute significantly to the number of qualified candidates seeking to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination.”
In considering a school’s application to register a program, CFP Board compares the program with the financial planning-related topics identified in extensive, periodic job-task analysis studies, which allows financial planning professionals to determine areas students should master in order to provide competent, ethical financial planning services.
The six required courses to sit for the certification exam include: General Principles, Insurance Planning, Investment Planning, Income Tax Planning, Retirement Planning and Estate Planning. The optional capstone course is a two-day course that is a combination and review of the previous six classes. The course uses case studies to tie together the various disciplines previously studied, and the class will be structured around the strengths and weaknesses of the students. The objective is to provide a review and prepare students for the CFP examination.
Early registrants, UNF alumni and Financial Planner Association members pay $799 per course or $4,644 for the series, which includes the capstone course. All other participants pay $849 per course or $4,944 for the series.
An independent certifying organization, CFP Board owns the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM and federally registered CFP (with flame design), which it awards to individuals who meet its education, examination, experience and ethics requirements. Students completing the financial planning program at the UNF Division of Continuing Education will be eligible to sit for the national CFP® Certification Examination administered by the CFP Board, which currently authorizes more than 58,000 individuals to use these marks in the United States.
The mission of CFP Board is to benefit the public by granting the CFP® certification and upholding it as the recognized standard of excellence for personal financial planning. For more information about the CFP Board, visit www.CFP.net.
