The University of North Florida’s weekly campus newspaper, the Spinnaker, was just awarded “Best of Show” in the four-year, weekly tabloid newspaper category by the Associated Collegiate Press during the 2005 National College Media Convention, held in Kansas City, Mo. More than 450 colleges and universities attended the convention, which is the largest gathering of college media providers in the country.
“The Spinnaker staff is made up of very dedicated people, and we take great pride in serving this campus,” said Dave Strupp, Spinnaker editor in chief and a UNF senior journalism major. “I think a big advantage for us was our redesign of the newspaper. We wanted to take a new angle, making it a more reader-friendly paper.”
UNF’s campus newspaper topped other college publications in their category from various colleges and universities across the country, including Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, Calif.; Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis.; Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y.; Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Ga.; and Metropolitan State College of Denver, Denver, Colo.
Staffed entirely by UNF students, the Spinnaker was also awarded this spring an honorable mention for the Best College Newspaper for Florida public colleges and universities by Florida Leader magazine. The Spinnaker is a weekly tabloid that prints 3,500 copies per week and is distributed on Wednesdays to the UNF campus.
