Department of Media Relations and Events
The University of North Florida, in cooperation with Father&Son Moving&Storage, is sponsoring a campaign to collect toys for children who are victims of Hurricane Katrina. The project, called Kids Kits, is designed to collect a wide variety of games, crayons, books and other items for distribution to children who have been relocated to shelters and hotels as a result of the recent hurricane.
“The UNF community is coming together in order to help the youngest of the victims impacted by Hurricane Katrina,” said UNF President John A. Delaney.
UNF and Father&Son Moving&Storage will be accepting donations through Friday, Sept. 9, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. The kits will be assembled next week and will be tentatively shipped on Sept. 14.
These kits will consist of new age-appropriate materials that can be used by children forced from their homes by the hurricane. All materials will be packed individually in backpacks and distributed to children. All items donated must be new. The only exception will be backpacks—both new and good used ones will be accepted.
Needed items include:
• New or good used backpacks
• Paperback children’s books
• Coloring books—nonviolent and appropriate for either gender
• Book lights and batteries
• Writing pads or notebooks
• Notebook paper
• Play-Doh packets
• Binders or folders
• Card games
• Board games
• Small stuffed animals such as Beanie Babies or small dolls.
• Face/hand wipe packets
• Antiseptic hand cleaner
• Toothbrushes and toothpaste
• Washcloths and hand towels
• Book covers
Donation drop-off points are the UNF Arena and Father&Son Moving&Storage. To get to the Arena, exit off J. Turner Butler Boulevard to Kernan Road. Follow the signs to UNF. Father&Son Moving&Storage is located at 6801-1 Stuart Lane South. From downtown Jacksonville, take I-10 West. Exit at Lane Avenue and turn right off the exit ramp. Go to the first stoplight and turn left onto Stuart Street. Stuart Lane South is then the second road on the left. Look for the Father&Son Moving&Storage sign.
