Meet Le'Shawn Spruiell
Disability Resource Center

Le’Shawn Spruiell is the office manager in the Disability Resource Center, and will celebrate her 10th anniversary at UNF on March 23, 2014. During her time here, she has served on the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee with the Intercultural Center for PEACE as well as the Annual Giving Campaign. She is also a member of the African-American Faculty and Staff Association.

Le’Shawn is passionate about helping others, and finds it rewarding to volunteer not only at UNF, but in her community as well. She has volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank, as a secretary for the community in which she lives, and for the JT Townsend Foundation, which has a mission to better the lives of children and adults with disabilities on the First Coast.

So far, Le’Shawn’s visited 22 of the 50 states, as well as Canada and Mexico. When she retires, she plans to visit the remaining 28 states on her list, and hopes to make it to Australia, France, Greece, Italy and Africa, too. She also enjoys line-dancing, singing, and shopping.

In junior high school, Le’Shawn was a cheerleader, and to this day, she can still turn an active cartwheel and round off! She also had the opportunity in the 1990s to meet and talk with Cuba Gooding Jr. while working as a receptionist at a jazz, rhythm and blues radio station.

Le’Shawn is married, and her husband has served 20 years in the U.S. Navy. They will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this June. She also has two sons, ages 20 and 14, and a daughter, age 17. The proudest moment in her life is when she became a mother.

Le’Shawn credits her daughter for having a significant impact in her life. Her daughter is slightly autistic, and is part of the Exceptional Student Education Program in high school. She is very focused and determined, is an advocate for herself, and doesn’t let her learning disability stop her from reaching her many achievements. She makes good grades, and is even taking American Sign Language, which Le’Shawn has always wanted to learn, and is now learning from her daughter.

One of Le’Shawn’s favorite UNF memories is bringing her daughter to the Jason Derulo concert here on campus. During the concert, Derulo touched her daughter’s hand, which was very exciting!

Thank you for your extraordinary service to the university!
