Women's Center

Mission Statement

The Women’s Center advocates for the political, social and economic gains of all people by eradicating gender-based inequalities in a supportive atmosphere that encourages and facilitates the evolution and development of personal and academic potentials.

Vision Statement

To engage and lead all in the celebration and advancement of women.

Purpose

The Women's Center promotes the growth, productivity and well-being of women in the University community. Although women have made significant gains in society, gender inequalities still exist. The Women’s Center is committed to advocating for gender equality and improving the status of women.

We recognize that gender inequalities are deeply connected to other areas of disenfranchisement and oppression in our society. Therefore, our programs and services strive to value and promote respect for all differences. This means that women and men and people of all races, cultures and sexual orientations are welcome in the Women’s Center.

Program Areas

Events

Each year the Women’s Center sponsors dozens of events that are free and open to the public. These events highlight the vast accomplishments of women and provide a forum for all to explore gender issues. From fun lunchtime workshops to special presentations by luminary authors and performers, there’s something at the Women’s Center for everyone.

Victim Advocacy Program

The Victim Advocacy Program provides confidential crisis intervention services to the University of North Florida community. The primary role of victim advocacy is to intervene on behalf of the victim and assist the individual in surviving the experience. This includes representing the victim’s legitimate interests regarding any problem or concern resulting from the victimization.

Rape Awareness Education

The Rape Awareness Education Program empowers students to make wise decisions by explaining the facts and dispelling the myths of interpersonal violence, sexual assault and dating/domestic violence. The program equips students with the tools to make informed decisions about their safety.

Bette Soldwedel Research Initiative

The Bette Soldwedel Research Initiative focuses on enriching the campus through greater infusion of gender studies, and to help women achieve equity with men in their professional advancement. To accomplish this mission, the Center will encourage and assist women and men of the UNF community who are engaged in research on gender issues.

The Women’s Center has been a vital hub of learning and advocacy at the University of North Florida for 25 years. All are invited to share in this legacy and make your own mark by taking advantage of the numerous experiences the Center has to offer.
