Want to Apply for a Living-Learning Community?
Welcome!
Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) are intentionally designed opportunities to enhance your education by expanding the "classroom" to include your residence hall and the greater Jacksonville community. LLCs allows students with similar academics, interests, or majors to take classes together and live on the same floor in the residence hall, while creating meaningful relationships with faculty, staff, and other LLC students. Research shows that students in LLCs feel connected earlier, make friends more easily, perform better in classes, and graduate at higher rates than students who choose not to live in LLCs.
Theme Housing promotes a direct link between residential and extracurricular life for students. It provides students who have common passions or interests the opportunity to live together in campus housing while fulfilling a common extracurricular goal. Different from Living-Learning Communities, Theme Housing Communities do not require students to enroll in a common course but do live together on the same floor in the residence hall.
Most, but not all, Living-Learning & Theme Communities are facilitated by a Learning Community Assistant (LCA). LCAs are student staff members who serve as mentors, provide a built-in support system, and enhance the sense of community. The LCA contributes to the education of residents by serving as a role model and academic resource as well as by linking them to other important departments across campus. Each community also has an Advisory Board that includes the LCA, Coordinator for LLCs, and academic or campus partner that connects to the sponsoring college or department.
First-Year Living-Learning and Theme Communities: There is a single application for these programs, and you are able to indicate interest for multiple LLCs and Theme Communities in the same application. If multiple applications are submitted, the most recent will be considered. Please follow the link below to complete the application in myHousing.
Returning Student Living-Learning and Theme Communities: Applications are considered on a rolling basis and priority is granted for earlier applications or until spaces are filled. Please follow the link below to complete the application in myHousing.

Why Live in a Living-Learning Community (LLC)?
Students who join a living-learning community:
- Have an easier transition into college
- Maintain higher GPAs
- Make friends quicker with people who share common interests and goals
- Develop a support network with other students, university staff, and professors
- Interact with professors and staff outside the classroom
- Increase critical thinking, self-awareness and interpersonal communication skills
- Meaningfully connect with Jacksonville through community-based projects
- Are exposed to additional leadership opportunities within the residence halls

LLC Application Deadline
The projected deadline to apply to a Living-Learning Community is:
- Rising Sophomore and Upper-Class Students - April 1, 2024
- Incoming First-Year Students - June 4, 2024
