Dr. Bowman is a member of the founding faculty of UNF's Department of Natural Sciences. He taught courses in biochemistry, instrumental analysis, thermodyamics, environmental chemistry, bioorganic chemistry and general chemistry. He designed and taught experimental undergraduate science courses The Origin of Life; Water Pollution; Science in the Arts and team taught courses Energy: Past, Present and Future; Mind and Matter, an Ecological Perspective, and Ecology Freshman Interest Group. He taught a graduate course in Biological Macromolecules. In 1988, Dr. Bowman was the first among natural science faculty to receive UNF's Outstanding Teacher Award, and in 2001, the first among the chemistry faculty to receive a Students' Choice Outstanding Professor Award sponsored by the UNF Student Government. In 2004 he was selected by his university faculty colleagues to receive an Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Dr. Bowman led the development several degree programs including a B.S. degree program in chemistry; a B.S. degree program in interdisciplinary sciences, a science-business track, and a Combined Degree Program with the University of Florida College of Dentistry (B.S. & D.M.D.).

Dr. Bowman has been principal investigator or co-principal investigator of over $5,000,000 in grants to support teaching, curriculum development, and educational reform. He founded UNF's Northeast Florida Institute for Science, Mathematics and Computer Education (now NEFSTEM) and Jacksonville's Alliance for Education, a business-education partnership that received three awards from the Duval Public Education Foundation including its highest award, the Beacon Business/Education Partner Hall of Fame Award in 1997. The Alliance was recognized by Florida Commissioner of Education Frank T. Brogan with a Business Recognition Award in 1995.

As the founding director of the UNF Environmental Center Dr. Bowman oversaw a broad program of environmental education and research including environmental research seed grants to faculty, environmental fellowships for students, proposals for new environmental degree programs, an inventory of campus natural assets and their management, revitalization of campus recycling, creation of a Multidisciplinary Transformational Learnig Opportunity focused on the St. Johns River, cooperation with Jacksonville University in an annual report of the ecologocal health of the St. Johns River Lower Basin, and an outreach program of seminars and environmental conferences on the UNF campus. During his four year tenure as director, the Environmental Center brokered over $500,000 in grants and received over $900,000 in gifts and donation committments.

Dr. Bowman designed the UNF Nature Trail System that was recognized as a National Recreational Trail by the U.S. Department of Interior in 1978. He led the campaign the resulted in the choice of Osprey as UNF mascot in 1979, and he played a central role in establishing the UNF Center for Humanities in 1989. In 2001, Jacksonville Mayor John Delaney presented Dr. Bowman the Mimi and Lee Adams Environmental Award in the "individual" category for his accomplishments in preserving and enhancing the natural environment on the UNF campus. In 2002, he was chosen to receive an "Outstanding Faculty Service Award" by the UNF Faculty Association.
