The meeting was called to order by Chair Brian Kopp, at 1:10 PM.

Meeting Minutes

  • Approval of the Minutes

  • Introductory Remarks/Old Business

    Chair Brian Kopp welcomed the committee members to the first meeting of the year.
  • New Business

    Deb Miller, Director of the Center for Instruction and Research Technology (CIRT) spoke to the committee about CIRT and its programs and projects. Prior to the meeting, Ms. Miller forwarded the latest CIRT annual report and an update report on the Canvas transition project via email to all committee members. CIRT operates the online learning laboratory and video production studio which are available for faculty to use. These resources can support course development, training, teleconferences, and lecture capture. In addition, faculty can develop video “trailers” for courses, program marketing videos, and instructional videos on a specific topic. Faculty can use the CIRT website calendar to schedule these resources and must attend a training session first. CIRT is also assisting in the development of hybrid courses where 50-79% of the instruction occurs in a different place or time from that of the student.

    CIRT introduced 3-D printing services last year.

    In the spring of 2017 CIRT will be offering faculty website domain services to permit faculty to maintain an online presence through the university. An implementation plan is currently in development.

    The transition from Blackboard to Canvas is underway. The migration is 25% complete. It must be completed by the end of spring 2017. Blackboard will not be available after May 31, 2017. Many faculty have attended training courses. There are also online self-paced training courses available. The Canvas Help Center instructor guides are very helpful for answering questions. Canvas offers some new features. There is a mobile application called “Poll”. Canvas rolls out updates approximately every 3 weeks. There is a “vote-up” process for bugs, fixes, and changes that assigns priority depending on how many users are interested in the modification.
  • Other Discussions/Announcement

    Brian Kopp announced that the next meeting would be on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 12:30 PM and that the University Police Department command staff would be the guest speakers. The meeting will be in the Library in Administrative Conference Room 2405A. In addition, the November meeting was announced. The Office of Research and Special Projects will be the guest speaker on Wednesday, November 17, 2016 at 3:30 PM. That meeting will also be in conference room 2405A.
