  • Approval of the Minutes
Minutes from the September 29, 2017 meeting were unanimously approved.
  • Old Business
    • The committee continued the discussion regarding an attendance policy revision forwarded by the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee.
      • The committee felt that the existing Student Attendance Policy already requires faculty to offer a make-up exam or quiz since the policy states, “In the event of absences due to participation in a University-sponsored activity, instructors must allow students the opportunity to make up work due during such absences. However, it is the student's responsibility to make prior arrangements with the instructor to hand in written materials (e.g., assignments, papers, and projects) and to reschedule any activities that would normally occur in class (e.g., quizzes, tests, presentations, and performances).
      • Based on this, the committee felt that the policy of dropping a low grade could be clarified by adding the statement, “This applies even if the instructor’s policy is to drop a low score”.
      • Alan will forward this revised version to the IAC for feedback and if they agree to the suggestion, the policy will be forwarded to executive committee as an agenda item.
      • In addition to discussing the policy, the committee discussed the need for a testing center on campus. If faculty are required to schedule make-up sessions for students missing quizzes and exams for university sanctioned events, the availability of a testing center on campus would greatly help to facilitate this process.
  • New Business
    • The committee briefly discussed a Student Bill of Rights statement that was forwarded to the committee. The FA Faculty Affairs Committee has already started looking at the statement, so the ASC will wait for their feedback before discussing this in detail.
    • The committee discussed the process for appeals for students who are suspended or expelled from a program for violation of a “professional standard”.
      • The committee agreed that students appealing such a sanction should have a process where they are able to take the appeal out of unit.
      • Krista Paulsen provided a policy that the Graduate School is developing for suspension appeals as a framework.
      • Scott Hochwald agreed to work on a first draft of an appeal process for the ASC to review and edit.
  • Adjournment & Next Meeting
The meeting adjourned at 1:00 PM.
Next meeting will be on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. in the OFE/FA Conference Room.
