The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center at the University of North Florida and the LGBT Community Fund for Northeast Florida present “The ‘T’ in Equality: Transgender Inclusion in America” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, in the Adam W. Herbert University Center, Building 43, Room 1058, on UNF’s campus. A reception will take place at 6 p.m.
Shannon Minter, Esq., is the legal director for The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), a national legal organization committed to advancing the civil and human rights of LGBT people and their families through litigation, legislation, policy and public education. As a transgender man, Minter is recognized as a leading national expert on transgender legal issues.
He and other NCLR attorneys litigate precedent-setting cases at the trial and appellate court levels; advocate for equitable public policies affecting the LGBT community; provide free legal assistance to LGBT people and their legal advocates; and conduct community education on LGBT issues. Currently, Minter and other NCLR attorneys as well as GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders are representing five service members who recently filed a federal lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s transgender military ban.
Minter has litigated impact cases across the country on behalf of LGBT youth, parents, elders, prisoners, employees, students and asylum seekers. He argued before the California Supreme Court in 2008 in the California marriage-equality case and represented same-sex couples from Tennessee in the 2016 U.S. Supreme Court decision establishing marriage equality nationwide.
This event, which is free and open to the public, is supported by a grant from the LGBT Community Fund for Northeast Florida and co-sponsored by the UNF LGBT Resource Center, TransAction Florida and Equality Florida. Following the lecture, Minter will have a Q & A session about the current law, policy and advocacy efforts for transgender equality in America.
Parking is free at the University Center. For more information about the event, contact the UNF LGBT Resource Center at (904) 620-4720 or visit unf.edu/lgbtrc.
The LGBT Resource Center’s mission is to provide valuable education and resources for the entire campus community with a commitment to advocacy, equality, respect and support for LGBT students, faculty and staff.
