The University of North Florida’s Taylor Leadership Institute, in collaboration with the Military Veterans Resource Center, presents retired Naval officer Capt. Rick Hoffman at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in Building 58W, Student Union Auditorium, Room 2704, as part of its Leadership Speakers Bureau series, “Leadership Presence: It’s Not What you Think It Is, Yet You Know It When You See It,” a dynamic series that honors the UNF Reads! book selection, “Outliers: The Story of Success.”
In an animated and engaging presentation, Hoffman will explain how he has parlayed his illustrious military career into a flourishing role as both film/movie advisor-consultant and actor. He will also discuss how his practical approach to leadership has more to do with life’s experiences than military training; dispelling some of the military’s biggest leadership myths.
“Capt. Hoffman turns some of the conventional leadership wisdom on its head with his leading-edge worldview by asking potent questions about systems, organizations and individuals,” said Dr. Annabel Brooks, Taylor Leadership Institute director. “His capacity to see the intersections of so many leadership arenas (military, entrepreneurs and the film industry) is nothing short of captivating.”
Hoffman, who served in the Navy for 28 years, commanded two ships, participated in combat operations in Iraq and Libya as well as several prestigious positions in the Pentagon. In 2003, he formed Orion Solutions LLC, a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business that provides an array of services in the Department of Defense sector. In recent years, he has served as an advisor-consultant for the blockbuster films, “Battleship” and “Captain Phillips.” Currently, Hoffman is an active member in the community, serving on the Chamber of Commerce advisory board for UNF and UNF’s Student Affairs Community Council.
Participants are invited to attend a reception, catered by Jason’s Deli, the Taylor Leadership Institute’s community partner, immediately following the presentation.
