The University of North Florida received the 2014 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award today from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
As a recipient of the annual HEED Award—a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion—UNF will be featured along with 82 other recipients in the magazine’s November issue. UNF is the only university in Northeast Florida to receive the award and is one of two state universities, along with Florida State University, to be recognized.
“The University is honored to be acknowledged for its excellent initiatives in the areas of diversity and inclusion,” said UNF President John Delaney. “UNF is dedicated to diversity and inclusion in the classroom and throughout the campus community.”
INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected UNF based on its exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives and ability to embrace a broad definition of diversity on campus, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, members of the LGBT community, and as well all others.
“We hope the HEED award serves as a way to honor those institutions of higher education that recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion as part of their everyday campus culture,” said Lenore Pearlstein, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine publisher.
Some of UNF’s services, programs and initiatives include a Diversity Recruitment Resource Guide with career-and diversity-oriented publications, job boards and websites for hiring officials; accessible housing options for students with disabilities; resource guide replete with searchable databases for faculty recruitment efforts; and search committee training that embraces diversity in the recruitment process.
Additionally, the University initiated the President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion and offers offices, affinity/employee/student resource groups for veterans, purchasing/supplier diversity, students with disabilities, LGBT students, parent and family programs, victim advocacy, the Women’s Center, Intercultural Center for PEACE, InterFaith Center, International Center, African American Faculty and Staff Association, and more.
“UNF was founded with a diverse student body, faculty and staff and is an exemplary educational organization and employer. With this recognition, the University is glad that we are a shining gem that will beckon others to want to learn and work here,” said Cheryl Gonzalez, director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity at UNF.
INSIGHT Into Diversity is known for its annual Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award, which is the only award recognizing colleges and universities for outstanding diversity and inclusion efforts across campuses.
