The Associated Collegiate Press has named Spinnaker Digital, the online version of the University of North Florida’s student-run news organization, as a finalist for the 2013 Online Pacemaker Award.
This is the second time Spinnaker Digital has been a finalist for the award, often referred to as the Pulitzer Prize for college journalism. The online newspaper was also a finalist in 2009.
“I’m proud of how the newly formed digital department, the editors and writers came together to provide a superior news resource for UNF students,” said Jason Kellum, Spinnaker Digital editor. “We're grateful for the support of the Center for Student Media and its board, which made this recognition possible.”
The Spinnaker is one of 54 finalists selected from 277 entries. This year’s winners will be announced at the National College Media Convention in New Orleans Oct. 23.
UNF’s first student newspaper started in January 1974 and was called the Halyard, which was later renamed Campus Up-Date in 1976. On August 17, 1977, the student newspaper was dubbed, The Spinnaker, the same name it has held for more than 30 years.
Spinnaker Digital started with the newspaper in 1996 and became its own department in 2011.
