The Military and Veterans Resource Center at the University of North Florida will host its 2nd annual Veterans Day Tribute at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, on the Student Union Osprey Plaza to honor UNF students, faculty, staff and alumni veterans who have served and are still serving in the military. UNF has more than 1,000 student veterans, including active duty military students, as well as over 100 faculty and staff who are veterans working on campus.

The program’s theme this year is “Honoring All Who Served” and will feature guest speaker Rep. Ander Crenshaw, who represents Florida’s Congressional District 4, which includes UNF.

“The Military and Veterans Resource Center is very excited to have the opportunity to showcase the faculty, staff and student and alumni veterans who teach, administer, attend and support the University of North Florida,” said Ray Wikstrom, UNF MVRC director.

The UNF Brass Quintet will present a selection of military service songs, followed by the recognition of veterans who have served in our nation’s conflicts around the world. The UNF Army ROTC color guard will present the colors; while there will be a moment of silence followed by a rendition of taps. Participants will be able to view various military hardware, campaign uniforms and other military items of interest.

The UNF Military and Veterans Resource Center provides military and veteran students with assistance in navigating admission, enrollment and financial aid processes. It serves as the primary campus advocate for military and veteran students, working with them to ensure their unique needs are met by coordinating with offices of various University services, such as academic advising, tutoring, counseling, disability accommodations, veteran programming, benefits information and assistance (financial and medical), as well as facilitating referral to state and federal resources and services.

The MVRC is committed to ensuring that military and veteran students successfully make the transition from the military environment to campus life and are assisted in sustaining their progress toward completion of their academic degree. The Center also provides opportunities for peer-to-peer support, mentoring, scholarships, internships and social networking.

The Center includes administrative offices, a student computer resource room, a work area for group study and a reception lounge area for veteran students to meet and relax. Additionally, a private counseling office for veteran students and their families to meet with counselors is available.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information about this event, contact Ray Wikstrom, UNF MVRC director, at (904) 620-2655.
