Dr. Judith Solano, associate professor of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of North Florida, just began her term as faculty representative and full voting member on the Florida Board of Governors. Her term officially began August 1 and runs through July 31, 2009.
She is the first faculty member from Northeast Florida to serve on the Board of Governors, a constitutional body created in 2002 to operate, regulate, control and be fully responsible for the management of Florida’s 11 public universities. Her predecessors have been from Florida A&M University, Florida International University and the University of Central Florida.
“The University is proud that one of our faculty members will play such an important role in advancing higher education in our state,” said UNF President John A. Delaney. “Judy has long been a leader on our campus and will certainly be an asset to the Board of Governors.”
Solano, an Arlington resident, will represent university faculty statewide as a member of the Board. She will serve on the new Legislative, Governmental and Community Initiatives Committee, developing long-range strategies on legislative issues and helping the Board of Governors forge a strong, productive relationship with the Florida Legislature. Her first meeting as a BOG member will be Thursday, Aug. 7, which will be hosted at the University Center on campus.
She presently serves as director of the School of Computing in the College of Computing, Engineering and Construction at UNF. She has been employed at the University for more than 20 years, starting as an adjunct professor and then serving as a visiting professor before her appointment as a faculty member.
Solano is the first recipient of UNF’s Outstanding Faculty Service Award and has been active on the UNF campus, serving on a myriad of committees and task forces throughout her years at the University. Committed to faculty in university governance, Solano has served as president of the University’s Faculty Association on three separate occasions, served a term on the UNF’s Board of Trustees and has been a longtime member of the Statewide Advisory Council of Faculty Senates.
She is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and received her doctorate and master’s degrees from Florida State University.
The Board of Governors is comprised of 17 members, 14 of whom are appointed by the Florida Governor and confirmed by the Florida Senate for a term of seven years. The remaining members include the president of the Advisory Council for the Faculty Senate, the Commissioner of Education and the chair of the Florida Student Council.
