The Fine Arts Center at the University of North Florida and its Kennedy Center Partners in Education (KCPIE) programming has been named as a community partner in a Professional Development for Arts Educators (PDAE) grant recently awarded to the Duval County Public Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.
The PDAE grant will afford the opportunity to create a nucleus of 45 trained “Integrated Arts Ambassadors” in six targeted schools -- 3 elementary and 3 middle -- to serve as model leaders/trainers/guest speakers. The goal is to create a “web of excellence” in arts integration by using instructional tools and learning strategies to help students achieve rigorous academic standards.
Through funding support from the grant, the Fine Arts Center (FAC) and the Florida 2001 KCPIE team will continue to offer programming that strengthens the capacity of teachers and schools to deliver standards-based arts education and to raise student academic achievement in the arts. In addition, the grant provides funding for KCPIE Guest Artist on-site training the during the school year as well as registration fees for teachers to attend the Arts for Learning: Tools for Teaching summer conference.
“Arts education programs are vital to a young student’s development and play an invaluable role in bolstering academic success,” said Sue Downs, Coordinator for the Arts in Education program. “The arts teach self-discipline, reinforce self-esteem, foster thinking skills and creativity and promote teamwork and cooperation, all of which are important qualities in life, work and community.”
The grant will be funded over a three-year, with about $325,000 awarded and distributed by Duval County Public Schools each year.
Since its inception, the Florida 2001 KCPIE team has offered more than 90 workshops to 384 educators and impacted over 25,000 students in Florida.
